Valencia has a long craft and artisan tradition with the ceramics industry being particularly important. The town of Paterna is famous for the production of socarrats (painted ceramic wall decorations) and for its green and purple coloured ornaments. There are hand painted fans, decorated with ivory or exotic wood, and incredible silk art which can be seen in ceremonial dress and the costumes during the Fallas festivals.
Valencia has a fantastic festival each March called Fallas, in which local areas build big papier maché models. They are mostly of a satirical nature and can be as tall as a few stories. Fallas are constructed of smaller figures called ninots, Valencian for "dolls". The fallas take a whole year of planning and construction to complete. Spain is organized into 17 Autonomous Communities (comunidades autónomas) and 2 autonomous cities (ciudades autónomas) - Ceuta and Melilla.
Administratively Spain also comprises fifty provinces. Seven autonomous communities are composed of only one province: Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia, and Navarre.
Mainland Spain is dominated by high plateaus and mountain ranges, such as the Sierra Nevada. Running from these heights are several major rivers such as the Tagus, the Ebro, the Duero, the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir. Alluvial plains are found along the coast, the largest of which is that of the Guadalquivir in Andalusia.
Due to Spain's geographical situation and orographic conditions, the climate is extremely diverse; it can be roughly divided into three areas:
A Continental Mediterranean climate in the inland areas of the Peninsula (largest city, Madrid).
